Caldwell 40 (also known as NGC 3626 and NGC 3632) is a lenticular galaxy in Leo, showing a bright central bulge and a smooth disk without
prominent spiral arms.
Several faint dust lanes cross the inner regions, giving subtle texture to the galaxy’s core.
Deep imaging reveals a diffuse outer envelope and a well‑defined disk that appears slightly inclined. The galaxy is notable for
its counter‑rotating gas component, evidence of past accretion or interaction. Caldwell 40 is a member of the NGC 3686 Group.
