NGC 4388 is an edge-on spiral galaxy located in the Virgo Cluster. It is classified as a
Seyfert 2 galaxy, meaning it hosts an active galactic nucleus powered by a supermassive
black hole. The galaxy shows a thin, elongated disk with prominent dust lanes and a bright
central region.
One of the most striking features of NGC 4388 is its extended ionized gas outflow, which
stretches far above and below the galactic plane. This outflow is thought to be driven by
the active nucleus and interactions with the dense Virgo Cluster environment. The galaxy
lies near Messier 84 and Messier 86, making it a familiar sight in wide-field images of
the cluster core.
