NGC 4550 and NGC 4551 are two neighboring galaxies located in the Virgo Cluster. They appear
close together in the sky and are frequently imaged as a pair. NGC 4550 is a lenticular galaxy
notable for its rare double counter‑rotating stellar disks, a signature of past mergers or
accretion events. It shows a smooth, elongated profile with little internal structure.
NGC 4551, positioned just north of NGC 4550, is a faint elliptical galaxy with low surface brightness.
It represents the numerous low‑luminosity ellipticals that populate the Virgo Cluster. Together, the pair forms a visually
appealing duo in wide‑field observations of the cluster’s dense central region.
